login.ibiblio.org is unreachable since around 9:15 AM ET 1/5/26

Subject says it all. A connection timed out around 9:15 AM this morning, 2026-01-05.

Thanks for taking a look.

An intrusion detection and prevention service flagged suspicious behavior by a user connected to login1 and that caused the campus ISO to isolate login1 from the network. We have reached out to the specific user, and ISO have asked us to wait for the recovery of a forensic image before we disable that user and make the host available again. We had hoped that that process would take under five hours, but it has been delayed. We will post again when login1 is once again available to the ibiblio community.

The login node is again available.

It seems that login1.ibiblio.org is experiencing another incident, starting before 6:30 pm ET, 2026-01-14.

It is ping-able via IPv4, but not IPv6, and ssh over IPv4 is getting ‘connection reset by peer’.

We are working on it. Sorry for the trouble!

As of 5pm Jan 15th (your time) I no longer get a “Connection reset by peer”, but my RSA key file no longer works; “login.ibiblio.org” asks for a password.

Please let us known (on this thread) when access has been restored. Thanks.

To me, asking for a password indicates that the home directories aren’t mounted properly on login1.

@gerardr @rf-confluence We think functionality has been restored. If remaining issues are found, please let us know.

I’ve looked as far as I can look, but I am pretty certain the connection resets are ipv6 failing and rejected by www.ibiblio.org.

Here is some more useful output curl works forcing it to ipv4 but ipv6 addresses are failing.
